This was best shown in one part where someone observes that Benedikt draws his gun not to shoot, but proactively to stop Marshall from doing so because he knew Marshall would shoot. I liked his well-described artistic side and how he was less reckless than the others. That said, I liked that the author didn’t make a big deal of the character being trans and wasn’t like, “Look! Representation!” and waits expectantly for the praise.īenedikt: I’d have to go with him for my favorite character. The whole thing was explained in a single strangely worded paragraph that took me like three rereads to comprehend. What I took from it was that she is a trans woman named Celia who, for her father to accept her, had to permanently assume the identity of her recently deceased triplet Kathleen. You only learn a little bit of her backstory. Kathleen: I liked Kathleen’s reassuring and bright personality. I hear you learn much more about her in the following books, especially Our Violent Ends. Rosalind: I found her a bit uninteresting-there just wasn’t much that she added. He faded into the background of a scene too often for a main character, and his personality didn’t have much to it besides complementing Juliette’s. Roma: On the other side, he was just kind of boring. Of course, that could make for an awesome character, but within the scope of this story it didn’t work for me.

I think if Roma hadn’t been around to keep her grounded, she’d spiral and become a villain.

She would go on rants about how messed up and violent the world is, yet casually kill any stranger who got in her way. Juliette: I know she’s a fan favorite, but for me she was too hypocritical. Now I have a lot of thoughts, so get ready. I was excited to start it and went into it not knowing much at all. These Violent Delights is the first book I’ve voluntarily read for a book club and all around the experience was pretty good.
